Inspirada Blog: The Importance of Ironing Your Clothes

Ironing your clothes is a simple habit that says a lot about how you present yourself — and it also protects your garments. Doing it carefully means the clothes you love will stay with you much longer.

If you love fashion and want to always look polished, you can't overlook the care of your clothes. A well-ironed garment can make the difference between an elegant look and a careless one. Ironing also has other benefits you might not know about:

  • It removes microorganisms that can remain in the fibers after washing, such as dust mites, bacteria, or fungi.
  • It improves the appearance and texture of the fabric, keeping it from looking dull or rough.
  • It prevents allergies or skin irritation caused by contact with external agents that build up on clothing.
  • It extends the life of your garments, since it keeps them from stretching or losing their shape from use or storage.

How to iron women's clothing correctly?
To iron women's clothing effectively and safely, keep a few tips and tricks in mind:

  • Check the garment labels for washing, drying, and ironing instructions — not every fabric handles the same heat or moisture.
  • Sort your clothes by color and fabric type. That way you can adjust the iron's temperature and steam to fit each garment's needs.
  • Iron your clothes while they're still slightly damp. This makes smoothing easier and helps prevent scorching or damage to the fabric. You can use a spray bottle to dampen the most wrinkled areas.
  • Iron in the direction of the weave, following the grain of the fibers. This prevents shine or marks from forming on the surface of the garment.
  • Always iron delicate garments — with embroidery, prints, or appliqués — inside out. This protects the details and keeps them from coming loose or wearing down.
  • Start with the "harder" parts of the garment, like the cuffs and collar. Then move on to the shoulders, sleeves, and body. This keeps the garment from wrinkling again as you handle it.
  • Hang or fold clothes right after ironing them. That way they won't wrinkle again while stored in the closet.

What types of ironing are there?
There are two main types of ironing: steam ironing and dry (hot metal plate) ironing.

A steam iron is a device that releases hot water vapor onto the garment, making it easier to smooth out and remove wrinkles. It's a fast, convenient method that works both vertically and horizontally. Steam also helps disinfect and freshen clothes. It's ideal for delicate or synthetic fabrics with a lot of drape, like silk, polyester, or cotton, and it's also useful for garments with pleats or ruffles.

A dry iron is a device that heats a metal plate, which glides over the garment with light pressure. It's a traditional, effective method that requires an ironing board and a spray bottle of water. It's ideal for thick, sturdy, or heavier fabrics like linen, wool, or denim, and it's also useful for garments with hems or seams.

Even though it's not the most exciting chore, ironing your clothes matters for your overall appearance too. And doing it well means the garment you love will stay with you much longer.
